Description

Numbers 1-7 are a row of seven terraced houses built between 1717 and 1718 by carpenter Robert Burford on land granted to him and plumber George Devall in 1716 by Margaret Skipwith. The houses are constructed of brown or yellow stock brick, with some upper storeys having been refaced. They feature brick bands at the first-floor level and rise four storeys with basements, each house having three windows. The windows have gauged red brick arches and dressings, and the houses have parapets.

Houses 1 to 4 have wooden doorcases with pilasters that support an entablature, patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. Houses 5 to 7 have wooden Doric doorcases with a mutule open pediment, patterned fanlights, and panelled doors. Some of the houses retain original lead rainwater heads inscribed with the year 1718.

Inside, No. 1 features cornices, a ground-floor buffet alcove, panelled dados, and a staircase with stick balusters grouped at the ground-floor newel. No. 2 has 19th-century sash windows, a ground floor with an egg-and-dart cornice, a buffet alcove, a panelled dado, and an 18th-century fireplace, although its staircase has been much restored. Houses 3, 4, and 5 are in single occupancy and have suspended ceilings, while Nos. 6 and 7 have not been inspected but are noted to retain original staircases, first-floor shutters, and box cornices.

The row also includes subsidiary features such as attached cast-iron railings to the areas, some topped with urn or torch flambe finials. Number 1 has a wrought-iron lamp-holder.
