Description
A row of four pairs of semi-detached houses, numbers 52 to 59 Gloucester Crescent, dating from the mid-19th century. The houses are constructed of yellow stock brick with stucco ground floors and dressings. They have shallow hipped, slate roofs with tall chimney stacks and bracketed eaves. Number 58 has a later box dormer.
The buildings are three storeys high, with semi-basements. Numbers 52 & 53 and 54 & 55 each have a single window. These windows are set within pilastered canted bay windows that rise from the basement, terminating in a cornice supporting an openwork balustrade to the first floor. The first floor contains a tripartite architraved sash window with a bracketed cornice, whilst the second floor has tripartite sashes with continuous sill bands, lugs and an eaves band. The party walls between these properties are defined by a narrow, round-arched recess. The ground floor entrances have panelled doors, overlights and cornices on returns, except for number 55, which has a recessed full-height bay that is attached to and similar in design to number 56. Numbers 56 & 57 and 58 & 59 each have two windows. These windows are tripartite sashes with bracketed cornices and sills to the stuccoed ground floors. Quoins are visible on the upper floors, with cambered stucco arches containing keystones to recessed four-pane sashes. Party walls are defined by a narrow, round-arched recess which terminates with a large bracket to the eaves. The entrance to number 56 is within a full-height recessed bay, featuring a flat-arched sash window to the first floor and a round-arched window to the second floor; both have margin glazing. The doorway is flanked by pilasters and has a panelled door with overlight. Entrances to numbers 57 and 59 are within two-storey recessed bays, each with a segmental-arched window at first floor level, and matching doorways.
The interiors were not inspected.
