Description
This is a K6 telephone kiosk, dating from 1935. It was designed by Giles Gilbert Scott for the General Post Office to commemorate King George V's Silver Jubilee, and is a development of his earlier K2 design. The K6 represented a streamlined and more cost-effective evolution of the earlier model. Giles Gilbert Scott was a significant British architect, responsible for works including Liverpool Cathedral and Battersea Power Station. Over 70,000 K6 kiosks were produced, and they remain a recognisable feature of British streetscapes.
The kiosk is constructed of cast iron, painted red, with long horizontal glazed panels in the door and sides. The crowns on the top panels are applied rather than perforated. Rectangular white display signs read "TELEPHONE" beneath the shallow-curved roof. The interior contains modernised equipment.
The kiosk is located adjacent to garden railings bordering Queen Square Garden, at the south end of Queen Square. It stands near listed bollards and a water pump. Nearby listed buildings include the Church of St George the Martyr (Grade II*), the Queen's Larder public house (Grade II), and No. 2 Queen Square (Grade II). The kiosk is designated at Grade II for its special design interest and its group value in relation to these surrounding listed buildings.
