Description

The Church of St George the Martyr is a Grade II* listed building located in Queen Square, Camden. It was constructed around 1706 by Arthur Tooley and underwent repairs in the late 18th century. The church was recast between 1867 and 1869 by SS Teulon, with further restorations in 1952 and 1989. The exterior features stucco with a rusticated lower portion and has a single-storey, rectangular plan with a chancel added to the south by Teulon, who significantly altered the exterior.

The facade facing Queen Square includes a Gothic porch to the right of a central projecting bay, which is pedimented and supported by three buttresses. The central buttress acts as a column between two architraved, round-headed windows, topped by an architraved oculus. Statues of praying angels sit atop the buttresses. Below the windows are four roundels featuring carved reliefs of the symbols of the four Evangelists. Flanking this bay are three rounded-arched, traceried windows. The entablature and projecting cornice add to the structure's elegance. The Cosmo Place return features a pedimented central round-arched entrance and four additional windows. At the west end, there is a small square-plan tower adorned with Gothic canopies, with the east face concealing a clock, and topped by a zinc-covered spirelet with louvred gablets.

Inside, the church was also remodeled, with a new column and roof system introduced by Teulon, who removed all galleries except for the north one, which he retained and remodeled. Notable fittings include the original fine reredos on the east wall, which was preserved during the reordering, along with a new south chancel that includes full fittings and a reredos with mosaic inlay. Other interior features by Teulon include stalls, a pulpit, a lectern, a parclose screen, and altar rails, as well as a font, organ, and case.

Historically, St George the Martyr was built as a chapel of ease for St Andrew's, Holborn, and became a parish church in 1723.
