Description
No. 25 Old Gloucester Street is a former boys' school, now a private residence, built between 1877 and 1878 by J and S Flint Clarkson. The building is constructed of stock brick with yellow brick and some stone dressings, topped with slate roofs, and is designed in an early Gothic style that is similar to No. 24.
It stands four storeys tall, with its main facade facing Old Gloucester Street and a shallow north front. The front is mostly symmetrical, featuring sash windows that are primarily grouped in pairs and have segment-headed tops, some of which are framed by high pointed arches above tympana. A string course runs above the ground storey. The top storey is adorned with triple gables that are stepped at the sides, with the central gable being broader and higher than the others, and chimneys positioned between the gables.
Entrances are located at the north end of the front and at the east end of the return, both featuring pointed arches under hood moulds and pointed fanlights above the doors, which enclose circular openings. On the north-east corner, there is a chamfered cornerstone inscribed with a biblical quotation and the date 1877. There is a later rear extension that lacks architectural interest.
The building forms a group with St George the Martyr Church in Queen Square and No. 24.
