Description

Numbers 5 to 8 Holly Place comprise a group of four terraced houses forming the northern wing of a semi-formal terrace, with St Mary’s Roman Catholic Church as its centrepiece. The houses were built around 1816, as indicated by a date plaque on Number 8. The exterior is primarily stucco, with the upper floor of Number 5 being multi-coloured stock brick. A stucco band defines the first floor. Number 7 has a tile-hung top floor. Number 8 projects, creating a curved angle on the right-hand side. The houses are three storeys high, except for Number 8, which has four. Numbers 6 to 8 have a single window to each side, while Number 5 has two. Round-arched entrances are present at each house, with Number 8’s entrance situated in the angle, featuring fanlights and part-glazed doors. The windows are recessed sash windows, with the first-floor windows of Numbers 6 to 8 being round-arched, and all windows having gauged brick flat arches. Cast-iron guards are fitted to all first-floor windows. Parapets top the facades. The interiors were not inspected. Attached to the houses are cast-iron railings with pineapple finials, some supported by low stuccoed walls.
