Description

Abernethy House is a semi-detached house built around 1819 as a parochial school for girls. The house is constructed of yellow stock brick, with a slate roof and dormers. It is two storeys high with attics, and has a double-fronted facade with three windows. The central entrance is distinguished by a wooden doorcase featuring fluted pilasters supporting an entablature with a modillion cornice, above which sits an overlight and a panelled door. Recessed sash windows are set within segmental, gauged brick arches. The return side of the house, facing Holly Walk, features round-arched windows. The interior of the building was not inspected during the listing process. By 1873, the building had been converted into a lodging house, famously visited by Robert Louis Stevenson for health reasons.
