Description
Hill Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century and early 19th century. It has one storey and attics, featuring a two-cell form. The structure is timber-framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof. An external chimney-stack is located at the north end and is enclosed by a small timber-framed extension. The cottage has one three-light 20th-century casement window, two small-paned older windows—one with cast-iron casements and the other with square-leaded panes—and an eyebrow dormer. The entrance is through a plank door.
Inside, the two-bay room on the north side, which includes the entry, showcases exposed framing. It has a main ceiling beam with a 3-inch chamfer and curved stops, while the unchamfered joists are set flat. The room features straight braces halved against the studs and an original clamp supporting the upper floor. The roof is likely a rafter roof without lengthwise strengthening. To the south, there is a section that appears to have been rebuilt, featuring a 19th-century ceiling and roof, with a noticeable change at the plinth level.
