Description
The Freckenham War Memorial is located within the churchyard of St Andrew and was erected in 1920. It features a granite Celtic cross set on a stepped and tapering plinth. The shaft of the cross is adorned with light panelling, and a foliate wreath encircles the arms of the cross. A smaller engraved cross with a shell motif is centrally placed on the cross. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the plinth. The East face bears the inscription, "To the glory of God and in grateful and abiding memory of 17 officers and men of this village of Freckenham who fell in the Great War, 1914-1918." Below this, the names of those who died in World War II are added, along with a quote from scripture that reads, "The righteous live for evermore, their reward is also with the Lord and the care of them is with the most High." This memorial serves as an important historical and architectural testament to the men from Freckenham who lost their lives in both World Wars.
