Description
70 Guildhall Street is a house that has been divided into three flats, dating from the 18th century. It is constructed of red brick with white brick dressings and features a plain parapet topped with a heavy stucco dentil cornice. The building has a plaintiled mansard roof and consists of two storeys, attics, and a cellar.
The exterior has a five-window range, all of which are 12-pane sashes set in plain reveals with projecting stone sills and flat gauged arches. The ground storey features four similar but longer windows. There are three hipped dormers with moulded wood cornices, each containing 6-pane sash windows. The central entrance door is a six-panel design with the top two panels glazed. It is accessed by a flight of stone steps that are set within the panelled reveals of the doorcase, which includes panelled pilasters, an open pediment adorned with fret ornament on enriched console brackets, and a fanlight with Baroque metalwork.
Inside, the entrance hall features a notable 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, ramped moulded handrails, and open bracketed strings.
