Description

Rougham House is a house that dates from the 16th century and later, with a front added in the mid-19th century. It has two storeys and attics, but the building is divided into two distinct sections with different roof levels. The structure is timber-framed and encased in colour-washed brick, topped with slate roofs and featuring an end chimney stack. The higher main range is from the 18th century, but its sash windows were mostly replaced in the early 20th century with small-paned casement windows that have transoms.

The entrance is through a flat-roofed enclosed porch, which has a door with six recessed panels and a rectangular fanlight with radiating tracery above. This porch is topped with a shallow triangular pediment supported by long brackets. The lower range on the right has one internal chimney stack and another at the east end. It features one four-light and one five-light small-paned casement window with arched heads, along with two casement windows on the upper floor that have gablet roofs above. Inside, one ground-floor room showcases a fine exposed timber ceiling, complete with a heavy main beam and joists that have roll-mouldings. This lower range seems to have originally extended further east and has a plain 17th-century butt-purlin roof, which is likely a replacement.
