Description

Baldwins is a house that was formerly Baldwins Farmhouse, dating from the 16th century and later. It has two storeys and an L-shaped plan, consisting of a one-bay hall range and a three-bay cross-wing. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with a roof covered in single Roman tiles. An internal chimney stack is located between the two ranges and features three short hexagonal attached shafts.

In the early 20th century, the exterior was modernised, giving it a deceptively Edwardian appearance. The roofs were replaced with a shallow pitch, and the ground storey has two canted bays with brick bases and wide-paned sash windows, while the upper storey features older two-light and three-light casements. There is also a lean-to along part of the rear wall.

Inside, the hall range has its main ceiling beams exposed, showcasing multiple roll-moulding and leaf-stops. The chimney stack that separates the two ranges has two back-to-back hearths, which have been infilled with later fireplaces but still retain remnants of timber lintels. The frame of the cross-wing is notably wide and was always divided into two rooms with plain framing, arched braces at the corners, and some blocked original windows. Additionally, three arched doorheads have been fitted into the studding on the outer wall of the upper floor; these are later additions, nailed in place, and appear to be purely decorative.
