Description

Bargate Farmhouse, which includes an attached outbuilding at the north end, is a former farmhouse that dates back to the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. The building has two storeys and attics, constructed from timber framing and rendered surfaces, with some parts underbuilt in rendered clunch. It features concrete pantiled roofs adorned with carved mid 19th century bargeboards and a late 17th century axial chimney made of gault brick. There is also a large external chimney on the left cross-wing that has three attached square flues. The windows are primarily mid 19th century small-pane sash windows with side-lights, along with some 20th century casements. The entrance doors, which are partly glazed and framed, have lean-to canopies supported by brackets.

Inside, there is a notable early 18th century staircase in a rear wing, featuring sunk-panelled newels, fretted splat-balusters, and moulded dado panels. An adjacent room showcases early 18th century panelling with small panels and moulded beads. The walls of the farmhouse were raised and the main roof was rebuilt in the 19th century. The attached outbuilding at the north end, which dates from the late 17th century, was likely used as a granary above a cart-shed. Originally timber-framed and rendered, it was encased in the 19th century with flint rubble and gault brick quoins.
