Description
Popes is a house dating from the 16th century, with some alterations made in the 19th century. It has two storeys and is constructed with a timber frame that is rendered. The front wall juts out at the first floor level. The left side of the house is made of painted brick and features a crow-stepped parapet gable, with corbelling in moulded brickwork at the first floor that follows the shape of the jetty. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has end chimneys made of red brick, with the left chimney having two diagonally-set square flues. The house mainly has 18th and 19th century three-light casement windows. There is a gabled, plain-tiled, one-storey entrance porch that includes a 20th-century entrance door. At the rear, there is a gabled staircase wing that contains remnants of the original staircase, including an octagonal newel post with a moulded cap; the stairs were rebuilt in the 18th or early 19th century. This substantial house was originally made up of three cells, but the right-hand service cell is believed to have been demolished in the 19th century after a fire.
