Description
This is a barn located north of Gatesbury's Farm House, dating from the early to mid-17th century with alterations from the 18th century. The structure is timber-framed and covered in tarred weatherboarding, with some sections made of tarred concrete blockwork. The roof is pantiled on the south side, while the north slope is covered with corrugated asbestos sheeting.
The barn features two gabled porches on the south side, along with various later additions. It has an 8-bay frame that was originally aisled, although most of the aisles were removed in the 18th century, leaving a small part of the south aisle in the easternmost bay. The side walls display original straight braces connecting jowled posts to former arcade plates, with infilling of 18th-century oak studding, mostly missing below the mid rail.
The two cart entrance porches, located in bays 3 and 7 from the west, have heavy jowled doorposts that are presumably original. Six of the seven tie beams still have their original arched braces connecting to the main posts. The central tie beam, which is missing its original braces, shows signs of a former studded partition. The roof is well-preserved, featuring one row of clasped purlins, no principal rafters, slightly cambered collars, and complete two-way arched wind bracing.
