Description
Purton Green Farmhouse is a medieval timber-framed aisled hall house, possibly dating back to the late 13th century. The two-storey bay at the north end, which includes a service area on the ground floor and a solar above, is a replacement from the 15th century. The two-storey bay at the south end was added in the 16th century and originally featured a fireplace that was removed during restoration by the Landmark Trust in 1971, leaving only the fine carved lintel. The exterior displays exposed studding with plaster infill, and the upper storey at both ends jetties on exposed joists. The heavy boarded and ledged doors have been restored, while the windows are a mix of original and restored elements, featuring diamond mullions. Inside, the hall boasts scissor-brace roof trusses, with original timbers that are smoke blackened. The staircase at the north end has been restored to its original form, featuring solid steps made of quartered oak. The roof is thatched and hipped. This house is of outstanding importance as one of the earliest framed houses in Britain.
