Description

The base of a medieval stone cross, originally located in Risbygate Street, is now situated in the grounds of the West Suffolk College of Further Education. This cross dates from the 13th or 14th century and features an octagonal moulded stone base with a socket hole, which likely formed the lower part of the Risbygate Cross. It was originally placed in Out Risbygate near the medieval Hospital of St Peter. The base later became known as the plague stone, with the hollow believed to have been filled with vinegar to disinfect money during epidemics.
