Description

The Gibraltar Barracks Walls and Gates are boundary walls surrounding the former Suffolk Localisation depot, which is now the Suffolk Regimental Museum. Built in 1878 by the War Office, the walls are made of red brick laid in English Bond, featuring some stone details.

The walls are tall, with a high plinth and a projecting top that has rounded copings. They are divided into narrow sections by sturdy full-height pilasters. The south side has two sections that have been rebuilt without any detailing, and where the ground level changes, the wall steps at intervals. At both ends of the south side, there are low crenellated corner turrets, each with three slit windows on the outer faces.

The main entrance to the barracks on the south side features high, wide wrought-iron gates flanked by smaller side gates. The four gate piers each have three plain stone bands: one above the plinth and two below the square stone cap with chamfered sides. Each pair of gate piers is connected above the side gates by brickwork, topped with a stone capping and moulded head. The left pier displays a stone block with a shield dated 1878, while the right pier features the interwoven letters VR. The words 'DEPOT SUFFOLK REGIMENT' are also faintly painted over the left gate.

These walls and gates are included as part of a group with the former keep, which served as the entrance to the depot, now demolished.
