Description
Ashdown Cottage is a house dating from the 18th century, with a core that dates back to the 14th century. It has two storeys and features one-storey additions on either side. The building is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a hipped thatched roof. A 19th-century axial chimney made of red brick, decorated with saw-tooth ornamentation, is located on the roof. The cottage has 19th-century two-light wrought iron small-pane casements and an arched, boarded and battened entrance door. The central core from the 14th century has sections of exposed framing on the inside, showcasing extensive wall wind-bracing. This area likely represents the remaining storeyed end bay of a larger house that originally extended southwards. The roofs were rebuilt in the 18th century, with one section incorporating medieval smoke-blackened rafters.
