Description
Bakers Farmhouse is a house that was originally a farmhouse, dating from the early 16th century with alterations made in the early 17th and 18th centuries. The building has one and a half storeys with attics and is constructed with a timber frame that is rendered. It features a thatched roof with a red brick axial chimney. The windows are 19th and 20th century casements, and there is a 20th century battened and boarded entrance door.
The layout of the farmhouse is unusual; it likely consists of a one and a half bay open hall, with a sleeping loft above a further bay on the right side and a standard service cell on the left side beyond the cross-passage. Notable alterations around 1600 include the insertion of a fireplace that backs onto the cross-passage and heats the hall, as well as the addition of a first floor. A kitchen wing was added to the rear, featuring a large open fireplace that blocks the rear of the cross-passage, which converted the layout to a lobby entrance plan. Additionally, the originally hipped roof over the service end was rebuilt with a gable in the 18th century.
