Description
South Lodge is a pair of lodge cottages built around 1900, featuring a core that dates back to the 16th century. The cottages are one and a half storeys tall with attics, constructed with timber framing and pebble-dash, and have boarding in the upper parts of the gables. They are topped with thatched roofs that have projecting verges on extended wall-plates and purlins. A central axial chimney made of red brick is set diagonally and includes pilasters in the Kentish Elizabethan style. The windows are casements with leaded hexagonal and diamond panes, and the entrance doors are boarded and battened. Each cottage has a two-storey thatched gabled entrance porch that stands out on the front elevation; the lower storey is open on timber posts with arched openings on either side, featuring carved pendants in the Elizabethan style. Above the entrance, there is an oriel window, and the gable above is cantilevered on brackets with arch-braced collars. The exposed first-floor structure is from the 16th century, and the original house was heavily restored and converted into cottages around 1900 for the Plumton Hall Estate.
