Description

Brandon War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, with later additions for subsequent conflicts. It is situated at the center of Brandon cemetery on a small mound at the junction of four paths, east of the Church of St Peter, which is a Grade I-listed building.

The memorial resembles the Blomfield Cross of Sacrifice and is made of Portland stone. It features a tall Latin cross with a tapering octagonal shaft that ends in a moulded foot. An inverted sword of sacrifice is carved in relief on the north face of the cross and shaft. The shaft rises from a three-tiered square plinth, which has chamfered side edges. A wedge-shaped stone tablet is placed against the lower tier of the plinth on both the north and south faces. The entire structure is set on a four-stepped octagonal base.

The inscriptions and names are incised in black lettering on the plinth and wedge-shaped stone tablets. On the north face of the upper tier of the plinth, the words "THE WAR/ 1914–1918" are inscribed, along with the names of 65 deceased individuals recorded underneath and on the other three sides of the upper tier. The north face of the middle tier of the plinth bears the dates "1939–1945," with the names of 23 individuals who died in the Second World War inscribed beneath and on the other three sides of this tier.

An inscription on the wedge-shaped stone tablet on the north face of the lower tier reads: "SONS OF THIS PLACE LET THIS OF YOU BE SAID/ THAT YOU WHO LIVE ARE WORTHY OF YOUR DEAD/ THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES THAT YOU WHO LIVE MAY REAP/ A RICHER HARVEST ERE YOU FALL ASLEEP." A similar wedge-shaped stone tablet on the south face of the lower tier notes the "KOREAN WAR/ 1950–1953/ (NAME)."
