Description
Oak House, located at 70 High Street in Brandon, is a house that was formerly an inn, built around 1730. It features a double-pile plan and has two storeys with attics and five windows. The exterior is constructed of gault brick, adorned with a limestone modillion eaves cornice at both the front and rear, as well as a string course at the first floor. The roof has two spans, with the front section covered in glazed pantiles and the rear section in Roman pantiles and slate.
The house has elliptical-headed dormers fitted with small-pane casements and parapet gables that include gable chimneys made of gault brick. The sash windows have segmental arched heads crafted from gauged brick; the first-floor sashes retain their original small panes and thick bars, while the ground-floor sashes have been replaced with larger panes. The entrance features an 18th-century doorway with a moulded broken pediment supported by console brackets. Inside the doorway is a semicircular fanlight with thick radial bars, and there are limestone steps leading up to a 19th-century half-glazed panelled door.
The interior boasts a well-preserved original staircase with a moulded handrail and turned balusters. The entrance hall and four additional rooms showcase fine joinery and moulded cornices characteristic of the early 18th century. One parlour is fully panelled with fielded panels, while two first-floor rooms feature full-height reused early 17th-century wainscotting, one of which has a strapwork frieze at the cornice level. Additionally, two rooms are enhanced by attractive fireplace surrounds.
