Description
Connaught House is a house that was formerly an inn, known as the Chequers Inn until around 1875. It was built in the early 19th century, with some alterations made in the later 19th century. The building has two storeys and attics, featuring five windows. It is constructed of gault brick and has a string course at the first floor, a moulded cornice with modillions at the eaves, and parapet gables with tumbled-in brickwork. The roof is a pantiled gambrel style, with flat-headed sash window dormers. There are axial and gable chimneys made of gault brick. The sash windows have flat arches of gauged brick and include large-pane sashes from the late 19th century. The entrance door is a 19th-century four-panelled design, partly glazed with an oblong fanlight above. It is adorned with a Greek Ionic portico that features a heavy moulded cornice supported by two columns.
