Description
Brandon Bargain Centre and Rutters is a shop and office building located at 18 and 20 High Street, dating from the mid-16th century with alterations made in the 17th, 19th, and 20th centuries. The structure has two storeys and features three windows. It is timber-framed and has a front that is underbuilt in painted 19th-century brick, complete with dentil eaves. The roofs are pantiled, with axial and gable chimneys made of gault brick.
The first floor has 20th-century three-light casements with segmental arched heads. The shop front for No. 18 is from the late 19th century, while No. 20 has a mid-20th-century shop front. The building was likely originally designed as a three-cell cross-passage entrance house, with the left-hand cell originally roofed as a cross-wing; the front range was reroofed in the 18th or 19th century. Some notable timber framing is exposed, including ogee-moulded floor members. A large fireplace was added to the hall in the 17th century. There is a 17th-century wing at the centre rear, likely used as a kitchen or brewhouse, featuring a gable chimney made of red brick and flint, along with a parapet gable and a blocked diamond mullioned window.
