Description
The Old Workhouse is a parish centre that was formerly a national school and workhouse. It was built in 1778, with a possible core dating back to 1673, and was converted into a school in 1843, as indicated by a sunk limestone plaque above the entrance that reads "Victoria National School. Established 1843." The building has two storeys and features five windows. It is constructed of coursed squared clunch rubble, with gault and red brick quoins, a set-forward plinth, and parapets. The roof is slated and has end chimneys made of gault brick. The 19th-century small-pane casements consist of two lights, with larger ground floor windows that include transoms and segmental arched heads. The entrance door, which is boarded and dates from the late 19th century, is set in a reduced original opening. The Master's house, which is attached to the right, has been altered and is no longer considered of special interest.
