Description
No. 23 Bridewell Lane is a house dating from the early 18th century. It features a timber-framed and roughcast front range with a plain tiled mansard roof, and a gabled 19th-century rear extension made of random flint and red brick. The house has two storeys, a cellar, and an attic, with the front range divided into two irregular bays and a chimney stack at the north end. Each storey of the front has a window with a segmental-arched head: the upper storey has a 12-pane sash window with a flush frame, while the ground storey has a tripartite window with a 12-pane central sash and smaller side-lights. There is also a large gabled dormer featuring a 3-light small-paned casement window. At the rear, there is an old 3-light small-paned casement window. Inside, the ground-storey room has a large chamfer on the main cross-beam, and there is an original winding stair in the north-west corner leading to the first storey and attic, which is a large space that was formerly used as a workshop.
