Description
44 Crown Street is a building located in Bury St Edmunds, originally known as The Three Tuns Inn. It has a late 17th century core, with alterations from the 18th century and rear extensions added in the 20th century. The structure is timber-framed and rendered, topped with a fully hipped plain tiled roof that features a wide eaves overhang and a coved plaster eaves cornice, along with an internal chimney stack.
The building has two storeys and cellars, with a five-window range displaying 12-pane sashes in flush cased frames, which replaced earlier cross windows with square leaded panes that were removed in the 1960s. The central entrance is accessed by four stone steps and is flanked by a plain cast-iron handrailing. It features a reeded wooden surround and a flat hood supported by curved brackets, with a door that has six raised fielded panels and a plain rectangular fanlight.
Inside, the large cellars are lined with flint and brick, with some sections featuring stone blocks in the walling. One of the upper fireplaces has a bolection-moulded surround dating from around 1700. The building experienced significant fire damage in 1949.
