Description
The Gables is a house dating from the late 17th century. It has two storeys and features exposed timber framing, with a plaintiled roof that includes fluted barge-boards on the gables. There is an internal chimney stack with a high shaft that has been largely rebuilt and includes recessed panels. A two-storey stair wing extends from the front of the house. The windows are 20th-century casements, and there is a rectangular bay window extension on the upper storey of the south gable, which has a pitched roof and is supported on posts over an open base. The timber framing is widely spaced, featuring a middle rail and straight braces, with some replacement studding. To the south of the chimney stack, the original hall and service room have been combined, showcasing a chamfered and stopped ceiling beam and joists, along with an inner skin of false studding on the walls. The roof has cambered collars that are nailed to the rafters, with no principal rafters and a small ridge-piece. A sawn-off section of the front wall-plate indicates that the stair wing is an addition.
