Description
The Elveden War Memorial is located on the north side of the A11 trunk road at Weather Heath, Suffolk, where the parishes of Elveden, Icklingham, and Eriswell meet. This memorial features a approximately 39-meter tall Corinthian column made of Weldon stone, which includes a base, pedestal, shaft, and capital, topped with a Portland stone funerary urn. The urn is a replica of a smaller Coade stone urn from 1791, originally from Mount Edgcumbe in Plymouth, and is decorated with fluting that extends to its widest point, where a band of Vitruvian scroll is present.
The pedestal of the memorial is rectangular, measuring approximately 7 meters by 5 meters, and has an inset door framed by a simple, low-pedimented architrave. This door is accessed by a stepped entrance on the north side and leads to a newel staircase with 148 steps that rise to the full height of the monument. The other three sides of the pedestal feature name panels for the fallen soldiers from each of the three parishes, carved in relief and oriented to face their respective parishes. The memorial lists 48 names from the First World War and six from the Second World War.
The main dedicatory inscription is located on the south-east side and reads: "HERE/ WHERE THE PARISHES OF/ ELVEDEN ERISWELL/ AND/ ICKLINGHAM/ MEET,/ THE INHABITANTS HAVE ERECTED/ THIS MONUMENT TO THE GLORIOUS/ MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THESE/ VILLAGES WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ FOR FREEDOM AND HONOUR IN/ THE GREAT WAR 1914-1919./ OF ICKLINGHAM/ (10 NAMES)." Below this, a smaller panel for the Second World War states "1939-1945/ (2 NAMES)." The south-west panels list "OF/ ERISWELL/ (9 NAMES)/ 1939-1945/ (1 NAME)," while the north-east panels read "OF/ ELVEDEN/ (29 NAMES)/ 1939-1945/ (3 NAMES)."
This entry has been updated to include a reference to War Memorials Online for further reading. The memorial was previously listed under the parish of Eriswell at a different entry, which was removed from the list on 6 February 2017.
