Description
The Cotton War Memorial is a Portland stone structure located in the churchyard to the southeast of the Church of St Andrew, which is a Grade I-listed building. The memorial features a small, ornately carved wheel-head cross that rises from the moulded top of a tapering pyramidal shaft, which is set on an elaborately carved plinth. This plinth rests on a simple base. Each face of the shaft is adorned with carved panels, while the plinth is richly decorated with blind arches that create recessed panels for inscriptions, along with crocketted corners.
The main inscription is found in incised and black-painted lettering on the east face of the plinth, which reads: "IN HONOURED AND GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN OF COTTON WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR, 1914–1919, AND AS A THANK-OFFERING TO GOD FOR VICTORY AND PEACE" with the additional phrase "THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE" located on the base. The names of the fallen soldiers are recorded on the other faces of the plinth.
Surrounding the memorial is a low ornamental iron rail that encloses all four sides.
