Description
Finningham War Memorial is a tall Saxon cross made of Portland stone, standing approximately 4.5 meters high. It features a tapering octagonal shaft that sits atop a square plinth.
The memorial includes black-painted inscriptions on white marble plaques located on the front and sides of the plinth. The front plaque reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD / (NAMES)." A dedication to those who fell in the Second World War is inscribed on the side of the plinth, stating: "ALSO / TO THOSE WHO FELL / 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)."
The plinth rests on a square base with two steps. The front faces of the steps are incised with the following inscriptions: "IN MEMORY / SACRED FOR ALL TIME TO THE / FINNINGHAM MEN / WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR A.D. 1914 – 1919," and on the lower step: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT / A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS."
