Description
Canham's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century, with significant remodeling in the mid 19th century. It has two storeys and attics and was originally designed with a two-cell lobby-entrance plan. A rear two-storey 19th-century extension creates a double-pile layout under a lean-to roof. The structure is timber-framed and encased in gault brick, topped with a plaintiled roof and featuring two internal chimneys made of 19th-century red brick. The windows are large-pane sashes, and on the ground floor, there are a pair of splayed bays with hipped roofs. The entrance is highlighted by a 19th-century gabled porch made of gault brick, which includes a glazed four-panelled door. This farmhouse is an unusually long example of the two-cell plan, and a large axial chimney was removed in the 19th century to create an entrance hall. Inside, there are heavy ogee-moulded bridging beams that support the first floor of both cells, along with very closely-spaced studding.
