Description

Walnut Tree Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from approximately 1530 to 1550, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. It originally had a 3-cell cross-entry plan. The timber frame of the building is visible; the south elevation was re-faced in red brick in the mid-19th century, while the remaining walls are plastered. The roof is covered in plain tiles, and it features an axial chimney constructed of red brick, with the shaft being rebuilt in the 19th century. Windows are largely C19 casements with cambered heads on the south side, with C20 casements featuring leaded lights elsewhere. A single window retains a glazed diamond mullion detail from the 16th century. A C20 lean-to porch with pantiled roofing covers the entrance. The timber framing is characterized by close-studding and prominent arch windbraces, large unchamfered floor joists, and a coupled-rafter roof. The farmhouse has two wide, back-to-back fireplaces with cambered lintels. The parlour cell at the east end may have been rebuilt in the later 16th century and features a roll-moulded bridging beam.
