Description

Valley Cottage is a house dating from the early 16th century, with an extension added in the late 16th century. It has one storey with attics and features a three-cell plan with a cross-entry. The building is timber-framed and plastered, with a pantiled roof that was formerly thatched and is half-hipped at the right-hand end. There is an axial chimney made of red brick, along with two external chimneys, all from the 19th century. The house has four 19th-century gabled casement dormers and small-pane casements that date from the 19th or early 20th century. There are two late 20th-century stable-type entrance doors, with the upper parts glazed with small panes.

The heavy medieval framing is fully exposed, showcasing tension-braced studwork and massive unchamfered floor joists. An original rear cross-entry doorway has been converted to a window and features a four-centred arched head. The roof is supported by coupled rafters. Originally, the house had a two-cell end-chimney plan, and there was a diamond-mullioned window in a first-floor partition at the east gable. The original chimney was likely timber-framed, and a two-bay parlour cell was added beyond it in the late 16th century, with the chimney rebuilt in brick and lintelled open fireplaces added in the hall and parlour.
