Description

BATTISFORD VALLEY ROAD TM 05 SE

6/18 Valley Cottage - - II

House; early C16, extended late C16. 1 storey with attics. 3-cell plan with cross-entry. Timber-framed and plastered. Pantiled roof formerly thatched; half-hipped at right-hand end. An axial chimney of red brick and 2 external chimneys, all C19. Four C19 gabled casement dormers. Small-pane casements of C19 or early C20. Two late C20 entrance doors of stable type, the upper part glazed with small panes. Heavy medieval framing fully exposed: tension-braced studwork and massive unchamfered floor joists. An original rear cross-entry doorway, converted to a window, has a 4-centred arched head. Coupled rafter roof. The house was originally of 2-cell end-chimney plan; a diamond- mullioned window now in a 1st floor partition was at the east gable. The original chimney was probably timber-framed; a 2-bay parlour cell was added beyond it in later C16 and the chimney rebuilt in brick with lintelled open fireplaces in hall and parlour.
