Description
Spinks Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the mid 16th century, with extensions added in the late 16th century and early 17th century at either end. The building has two storeys and a three-cell plan. It is constructed of timber framing and roughcast, with a concrete pantiled roof that was originally thatched. There is an internal end chimney made of early 17th century red brick, an axial chimney that is partly plastered and partly rebuilt in the 20th century, and an external chimney from the 19th century at the south-west end. The windows are small-pane casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, some featuring 20th century leaded glazing. A late 20th century entrance porch is made of red brick and has a glazed door.
The core of the farmhouse consists of a mid 16th century three-cell house with plain heavy framing, and there is evidence of a diamond mullion window and a coupled rafter roof that was originally hipped at both ends. In the late 16th century, a large lintelled open fireplace was added to the hall, and the parlour cell was extended by one bay. Around 1630, a plaster ceiling with fleurs-de-lys insets was added to the parlour, along with an arched open fireplace at the gable. Above this, in the chamber, there is an ovolo-moulded window, and the chimney blocks a late 16th century diamond mullioned window.
