Description
Tye Cottage is a house dating from the mid 16th century, with alterations made in the mid 20th century. It features a three-cell lobby-entrance plan, and the hall was originally open. The building has one storey and attics, constructed from timber framing and plaster, with a concrete tiled roof that was formerly thatched. There is a central 17th-century chimney made of red brick, although the shaft has been mostly rebuilt in the 20th century. The windows are mid 20th-century casements with leaded lights, and there is a lean-to porch from the mid 20th century with a framed and boarded door.
Inside, the parlour cell has exceptionally closely spaced studding. The fireplace was nearly rebuilt in the mid 20th century but still shows signs of a fully-framed timber chimney, including studs that once rose from the bressumer, which has since been removed. The open truss in the hall features a slightly cambered tie-beam and evidence of long arch braces. There are three original 4-centred doorheads that have been repositioned. The roof was renewed in the 20th century. Tye Cottage is included in the heritage listing despite these alterations due to its unusual sub-medieval form.
