Description

Kestrel Cottage and Willow Cottage were originally one house, built in two phases around the 18th century and incorporating earlier elements. Kestrel Cottage, which forms the hall range, was rebuilt around 1700 using parts of a medieval building. Willow Cottage, likely dating back to the 17th century but remodelled in the mid-19th century, serves as the parlour block. The cottages are one storey high with attics. They have a three-room layout. The front of the building is timber-framed and clad in 19th-century red brick, while the rear is plastered. The roofs are thatched, with 18th or early 19th-century casement dormers. An axial brick chimney, dating from the 17th or 18th century and constructed of red brick, is present, along with a 19th-century chimney built of gault brick on the left side. The windows are 19th-century casements with arched heads. Kestrel Cottage has a boarded entrance door, while Willow Cottage has a 20th-century flush door. Internally, the timber framing of Kestrel Cottage is exposed, revealing reused smoke-blackened timber components and rafters from the original medieval hall. The 1st floor joists, believed to be sycamore and set on-edge, date to around 1700. The hall contains an open fireplace with a lintel.
