Description
This building began as a meeting hall for the Ancient Order of Foresters and is now an antiques showroom. It was constructed in 1905, designed by Ipswich architect Raymond Wrinch, as recorded on the foundation stone. The facade is white brick with stone dressings, while the rest of the building is red brick. It has a slate roof and is two storeys high. The facade is unaltered and consists of three bays. The ground floor features four piers with banded rustication, connected by a moulded string course. These piers support coupled engaged Ionic columns that support an entablature and a dentilled, pedimented gable. Side bays have sash windows with glazing bars, set within moulded architraves with triple keys. Upper windows have broken pediments supported by brackets. The central bay has a tripartite panel, pedimented to match the upper windows, displaying a coat of arms. A keyed oculus is located in the gable. A moulded, semi-circular, triple-keyed entrance arch, with a panelled soffit and supported by coupled columns, provides access. Inside, the original paired semi-glazed doors remain, along with a cornice above and flanking sash windows. The interior includes a gallery with bowed iron railings. The building is a prominent feature of the street, making an important contribution to its character and is included on the list for group value.
