Description

Elm Farmhouse is a former farmhouse that dates from the mid 16th century, early 17th century, and early 19th century. It consists of two sections. The front section, built in the early 19th century, features plastered brick, with the lower section and side walls painted instead of plastered. It has a slated roof with gable chimneys made of gault brick. The building is two storeys high and has three windows, which are small-pane sashes with flush frames. The ground floor windows have boarded shutters. The entrance door has two tall beaded panels, a square fanlight, and a flat canopy supported by brackets.

Behind this, the earlier house was constructed in two stages, from the mid 16th century and early 17th century. This section has a three-cell plan, with the service cell on the left being an addition from the 17th century. It is also two storeys tall, timber-framed, and plastered, with a thatched roof that is hipped at the right end. There is an axial chimney made of red brick from the 16th or 17th century. The building features various 19th and 20th-century casements. The 16th-century section showcases good framing, including close-studding and chamfered floor joists, with pyramid chamfer stops on the binding beam in the hall. It has a clasped purlin roof and a large cambered lintel above the parlour fireplace on the right. The 17th-century framing is complete but plain and of slightly lesser quality.
