Description

Old Farmhouse is a late 15th century or around 1500 farmhouse that is one storey high with attics. It is designed as a three-cell open-hall house, constructed from timber framing and plastered. The roof is thatched and features prominent thatched gabled dormers, which may date from the 17th or 18th century, along with bargeboards that have 19th century turned finials. The building includes an axial chimney, with the shaft rebuilt in 20th century red brick, and a 19th century end chimney to the right, also with a rebuilt shaft. The windows are small-pane casements from the 18th and 19th centuries, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 19th century, along with a 20th century thatched gabled open porch supported by posts.

This farmhouse is a well-preserved example of an open-hall house. The two-bay hall features a central open truss with an arch-braced cambered tiebeam, although one brace is missing. The studding is quite widely spaced but heavy. The service rooms contain massive unchamfered floor joists. One of a pair of 4-centred arched service doorways remains, as the rooms have been united. The roof has coupled rafters, and both ends were originally half-hipped. An axial chimney was added, backing against the cross-entry, which has an altered lintelled fireplace. An upper floor with chamfered joists was inserted in the hall in the early 17th century.
