Description

Orchard House is a house dating from the early or mid 16th century, with alterations made around 1800 and in the mid 20th century. The building has one storey and attics, featuring a timber frame that is plastered, and a thatched roof that is half-hipped to the left, with one eyebrow casement dormer. There is a 17th-century axial chimney made of pink and buff brick, and a 19th-century chimney made of gault and red brick to the right. The windows are small-paned casements from the 19th and 20th centuries, and there is a boarded entrance door from the 20th century set beneath a gabled porch.

To the right of the main chimney, there is a large room where the upper floor was removed in the 20th century. Adjacent to this is a small parlour block with exposed studding and long arch windbraces. One bay of an open hall is next to it, with the dividing partition completely removed. Both original hall windows are visible but blocked, showing transoms and evidence of diamond mullions. An open truss with a cambered arch braced tie-beam features a binding beam at first floor level, with heavy joists on the left side only. This suggests a possible croglofft arrangement, indicating a single-bay open hall with a sleeping loft above the adjacent bay. The rest of the house was likely added around 1800, with further additions made to the rear in the 20th century.
