Description
The Thatched Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century, with alterations made in the early 19th century and mid 20th century. It originally had a two-cell plan and features one storey with attics. The structure is timber-framed and roughcast, topped with a thatched roof that includes two eyebrow casement dormers. There is an axial chimney, with its shaft rebuilt in 20th century red brick. Most of the windows are 20th century casements. A mid 20th century thatched gabled entrance porch leads to a panelled door. The original layout included a hall on the left and a service cell on the right, with evidence of a wide timber-framed chimney between them. The large lintel over the left-hand fireplace shows signs of its previous use in the chimney, and there is smoke-blackening in the upper level of the chimney area, as the current chimney was rebuilt around 1980. The first floor joists are unchamfered and laid flat, and the roof has clasped purlins. There is a 19th century clay lump extension on the right and smaller pantiled extensions on both the left and right sides. The cottage is included in the listing despite the 20th century alterations due to its interesting 16th century framing.
