Description

Pooles Farmhouse is a late 16th-century farmhouse with a three-cell plan and a lobby entrance. It has one storey and attics, featuring a timber-framed structure that is pebble dashed. The roof is covered with plain tiles and includes a 19th-century gabled casement dormer. There is an axial chimney, with its shaft rebuilt in 19th-century red brick. The windows are three-light casements from the 19th century. A late 19th-century gabled entrance porch, adorned with ogee-curved bargeboards, leads to a four-panelled door.

The farmhouse has undergone alterations in the late 16th and early 17th centuries, making the original layout unclear, although it likely started as a two-cell form. The central chimney bay is flanked by two pairs of inserted base-crucks that support heavy collar beams, while earlier tie-beams have been removed from the chambers above the hall and parlour. There is evidence of shuttered unglazed windows in the service rooms on the left. The central hall features good late 16th to early 17th-century chamfered floor joists. The parlour cell has a bridging beam with 17th-century lambstongue chamfer stops, indicating an extension. The roof is a well-constructed wind-braced clasped purlin roof from the late 16th century. Additionally, there is a short service wing from the 17th or 18th century at the rear left, along with a partial medieval moat.
