STOWUPLAND THORNEY GREEN TM 05 NE

7/196 Pooles Farmhouse -

-- II

Farmhouse, late C16. 3-cell plan with lobby entrance. One storey and attics. Timber-framed and pebble dashed. Plaintiled roof, with one C19 gabled casement dormer. An axial chimney, the shaft rebuilt in C19 red brick. 3- light C19 casements. Late C19 gabled entrance porch with ogee-curved bargeboards; 4-panelled door. The house has been altered in late C16/early C17, and the original layout is unclear although probably of 2-cell form. The central chimney bay is flanked by two pairs of inserted base-crucks supporting heavy collar beams; earlier tie-beams have been removed from chambers over hall and parlour. Evidence for shuttered unglazed windows in service rooms to left. The central hall has good late C16/early C17 chamfered floor joists. The parlour cell has a bridging beam with C17 lambstongue chamfer stops suggeesting an extension here. Good wind-braced clasped purlin roof of late C16. A short service wing of C17/C18 to rear left. Partial medieval moat.
