Description

Cottage Farmhouse is a mid-16th century farmhouse, originally with a three-cell plan and a lobby entrance. It is a single storey with attics. The house is timber-framed and has a pebbledashed exterior. The roof is covered in concrete plain tiles, although it was formerly thatched. There are three 20th-century dormers with small panes of glass and cusped bargeboards. An axial chimney, rebuilt in the 19th century, is constructed of red brick and features three diagonally-set square flues on a sawtooth banded base. A similar chimney is located at the left-hand gable, with two others at the rear. A gabled porch was added in the early 20th century at the lobby entrance; the door is likely original to the 16th century and is made of battened planks, with nailheads and strap hinges. The timber framing is heavy and largely unmoulded. The first-floor beams are chamfered. At the right-hand end of the house are a pair of basecrucks that previously supported a half-hip roof. A concealed mullioned window remains in the gable. The left-hand section of the farmhouse appears to be a slightly later addition, likely an extended service cell.
