Description
Sawyers is a house dating from around 1500, designed as a three-cell open hall house. It has one storey and attics, constructed with a timber frame and pebble dash. The roof is thatched and half-hipped at both ends. There is a central 17th-century chimney featuring twin square shafts made of red brick, which were recapped in the 19th century. The house has two 20th-century eyebrow casement dormers and small-pane casements from the mid-20th century. The entrance door, which is boarded and battened, dates from the 20th century and is located at or near the cross-entry. Inside, the open hall consists of two bays, with the upper bay being significantly longer. The open truss features a cambered tie-beam with chamfered arch-braces that have a pronounced four-centred curvature, along with an octagonal crownpost that has a concealed capital. The close-studding is well tension-braced, and there is moderate smoke-encrustation present. The service cell consists of two bays, but the partition at the service end is missing.
