Description
Byways is a house that was later converted into two cottages. It dates from the late 16th century, with possible earlier origins, and features a left-hand section that was added or rebuilt in the 18th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof, and has one and a half storeys in a three-cell layout. It includes late 19th-century small-paned casement windows, while two former doorways have been replaced by mid-20th-century windows. There are bracketed drip boards above all openings and three gabled dormers. Inside, there is an internal stack with two square shafts set diamondwise, dating from the 18th century or earlier. The right gable end has a four-panel door leading into a former shop. At the rear left, there is a mid-20th-century addition and the main entrance. The older ground floor rooms feature plain joists set flat, and the first floor has plain studding.
