Description

Church Farm Cottage is a house dating from the first half of the 16th century, with later alterations. It is timber framed and plastered, topped with a thatched roof, and has one and a half storeys. The building has a three-cell form with different origins and features three windows, which are 20th-century two-light small-paned casements. There are also two eyebrow dormers with single-pane two-light windows. The entrance is a lobby with a mid-20th-century gabled porch and an eight-panel door. Inside, there is an internal stack, which is a later addition, featuring a small shaft that is probably from the 19th century. The interior has undergone considerable alteration, making the original layout unclear. It has widely spaced studs and arched wall braces that pass through the floor level. To the right of the stack, there is one bay of square chamfered oak joists and another bay with irregular joists. To the left, a bridging beam about one meter from the chimney breast shows evidence of studs framing a timber flue, and this beam supports a later ceiling made of square pine joists. The roof has not been examined.
