Description
Timbers is a house dating from the mid-16th century, with alterations made in the 20th century. It features a timber frame, is plastered, and has a thatched roof. The house has four bays facing southeast and includes a stack located in the second bay from the left, against the rear wall, which dates from the late 16th century. There is a staircase extension in front of the stack, added around 1936, which has a hipped roof. The building is two storeys high and has three 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and four on the first floor, along with a 20th-century door and a gabled porch.
Inside, the house has jowled posts, heavy studding with curved tension braces that are trenched to the inside, and transverse and axial chamfered beams with step stops. The heavy plain joists are of horizontal section. Although the stack is made of small bricks and was built in the second half of the 16th century, it is an addition to a short bay that was likely originally designed for a timber-framed chimney. The mantel beams are chamfered and feature lamb's tongue stops.
