Description

The White House is a house that dates back to the 15th century, with alterations made in the 16th, 18th, and 20th centuries. It features a timber frame with plastering and a thatched roof. The original 15th-century hall, which has two bays, faces southeast and includes a late 16th-century axial stack at the right end. There is a two-bay extension from the late 16th century and a one-bay extension from the 18th century. The 20th century saw further extensions added to the right and at the rear of the house.

The building has two storeys, with four 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and three on the first floor. The main entrance is located in the right return wall, and there is a plain door. Inside, the house features jowled posts, heavy studding, and two large wood-burning hearths. The hall contains a cambered tiebeam with deep arched braces that almost meet in the middle, along with a late 16th-century inserted floor that has a chamfered transverse beam with lamb's tongue stops and longitudinal plain joists of horizontal section. There are three inserted windows of early glazed type: one with hollow-moulded mullions in the right upper wall of the hall, which is blocked by the stack; one with ovolo-moulded mullions in the left lower wall of the hall, which is also blocked; and one in the front upper wall of the hall, which is blocked as well. The roof is currently inaccessible, but it was originally constructed with crownposts, possibly having been rebuilt.
